Huawei Mate S sets sights on the iPhone with Force Touch and 5.5in HD screen
CHINESE PHONE MAKER Huawei has unveiled the Mate S, a premium Force Touch-equipped smartphone that has its sights set on the iPhone 6S Plus.
Unveiled during the firm's IFA press conference in Berlin, the Huawei Mate S is the successor to last year's Ascend Mate 7, and ups the ante in the specs department.
The Huawei Mate S sports a smaller yet tougher 5.5in Full HD 2.5D display, which beats the iPhone 6S (or iPhone 7) to it with built-in Force Touch technology. To prove its merit, Huawei demonstrated that you can use Force Touch to weigh an orange on the smartphone's screen, if that's your cup of tea, or it can be used for functions such as zooming in on content.
Huawei has also equipped the smartphone with an improved fingerprint scanner on its rear which it claims makes it 100 percent more accurate than previous efforts. 'Knuckle Sense 2.0' functionality is also included, a feature that allows you to take a screenshot by tapping your knuckle on the Gorilla Glass display, for example.
Knuckle-activated gestures are unlikely to persuade many to ditch their iPhone, but the smartphone's design might. The Huawei Mate S has a curved metal case measuring a skinny 7.2mm thick.
It's also likely to give Apple's next iPhones a run for their money in the photography department with a 13MP rear-facing camera with OIS and an 8MP camera on the front.
The Huawei Mate S uses an octa-core Hirin processor alongside 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, NFC, a 2,700mAh battery and a skinned version of Google's Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system.
The Mate S will be available to pre-order in Europe from 15 September, although no prices and release date details have yet been confirmed.
Huawei also announced availability details for the Huawei Watch during its IFA press conference on Wednesday. The firm said that the Apple Watch rival will be available to buy in the UK next month ahead of its release later in the year, but retailer MobileFun has already started taking orders for the device. µ
